In the Driver's Seat

Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You're not in the driver's seat; I am. Don't run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I'll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?
Matthew 16:24-26 (MSG)

You've probably seen a number of the signs like the one shown in front of many churches. Signs with catchy little phrases that make you think or snicker to yourself.

While recently studying the book of Matthew, I read the above passage, and it struck me. I mean it struck me hard. Richard, GET OUT OF THE DRIVERS SEAT!
I was brought up to not rely on others for what you can do. So much so that I have always had problems delegating, and a "If you want it done, do it yourself" attitude.

Unfortunately, I can honestly say that I have often times taken that attitude when it comes to Jesus. I can just do it myself...on my own...a lone ranger. I can look back on moments in my life, where I probably didn't even let Jesus get in the passenger seat.

Thankfully, He has allowed me to pull this car called life over to the side of the road, and turn the wheel over to Him.

Now, if I could just stop being a back seat driver!
