In the amount of time it took you to open this blog, I have lost the attention of 30% of you. Oops, there goes another 5%. The attention span is such a fragile thing.
Wikipedia defines attention span like this; Attention span is the amount of time a person can concentrate on a single activity. With the average American having a very short attention span, the church battles this constantly.
For many churches gone are the days of three hour services. We get antsy when the pastor goes five minutes over. That is a reason why technology can be a very powerful ministry tool. Because it draws attention, and usually rather quickly.
When done correctly technology grabs your attention and amplifies what is being said. You will notice that a pastor will use an illustration of some type about every 8-12 minutes of a sermon, to draw your attention back in and reinforce it.
But when done incorrectly, technology becomes a distraction from the message. Leading people away and muting the intended use.
That is why it is so very important for media teams to sharpen their attention spans. A lapse of attention by one team member on the equipment could bring the lapse of attention that pulls someone away from Christ.
Hummm? Channel your attention and think about that for a few minutes.
